International Same-Sex Hand Holding Week

17th May - 23rd May 2010

"Hold and Be Bold"

It began with the International Day Against Homophobia & Transphobia (IDAHO), on Monday 17th, with a Global Kiss-in that spread simultaneously across the globe like a big ole glob of love; and BAMM before you knew it, we were the first international same-sex hand holding week. We reached a record number of attendees on our Facebook page (2528 committed hand holders), and numerous mentions in blogs, magazines, radio stations and TV programmes. Gareth Thomas, the out Welsh  rugby player endorsed the week, and David, Founder, conducted his first radio interview from Paris for Gay Radio (whilst eating Moules Mariniere). We heard hand holding stories during the week from South Africa, Paris, England, Cairnes in Australia, America, Peru, Scotland, Amsterdam, Canada, Wales, Barcelona, and Frankfurt (where they organised a 160 strong chain of hand holders). What a success! And it all to fit somehow as the late Harvey Milk ended the week in style with his posthumous birthday on Sat 22nd and Harvey Milk Day in the US. And now we return to our regular monthly hand holding SSHH Saturdays (last Sat of every month). Below is a selection of photos sent into us, that can also be found on the diaries page in the relevant location. As one member of our Facebook group summed up the week: "Hold and Be Bold!"

"We´ve done it :). Germany is on the map. Although it was raining all day, we were about 160 people and for five minutes the Hauptwache was filled with people of the same sex holding hands. Surprisingly my little Flashmob created a little group movement and suddenly all people were forming a huge circle.. Not quite the idea of SSHH but it looked quite impressive and the people were at least still holding hands of people of the same sex. ;) The media reaction is satisfying and next year I´ll make it bigger, better and with more people. SSHH! :) Here is the official video"

"[It was] International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHO) and to show our support we held a special event, in partnership with South Essex Homes, on the First Floor Foyer of the Civic Centre between 12:15pm – 2:00pm. The event included information on issues such as health and hate crime reporting and representatives from the Citizens Advice Bureau, Victim Support and a range of other organisations attended to provide information and advice. The event was open to all staff and members of the public. Staff were also invited to take part in ‘A Day in Hand’ photo, which aims to inspire and support same-sex couples who want to hold their partners’ hand in public. This took place outside the Civic Centre at 12:00pm."

"Hiya.
I came across your site by accident, while doing some youth work research, but what a brilliant accident & a brilliant idea!!!! I live in Manchester in the United Kingdom and I am employed as a Youth worker. I did my part and promoted the day in hand week at our Youth club based in Ashton Under Lyne and was really proud of how many of our young people aged 12 - 19 years old got involved and were happy to have their photos taken holding hands in front of their friends. Unfortunately due to the laws governing child protection I am unable to provide these photos, but I am happy to include photos of myself and the other youth workers holding hands at our youth club during opening hours who happily give their consent. I'm the one with the goatie beard "

"Hello,
This picture was taken on the 14th may down in Littlehampton at West Durrington registry office, where me David and Keith was standing outside for Keith's niece wedding day.."

"This photo was taken at Aberystwyth town centre in Wales, UK of Dan & Jem who are partners, on the 16th May on the eve of Same Sex Holding Hands Week. So many countries have no problem with guys holding hands with other guys or girls with girls. Even kissing is not so much an issue particular in greetings and leaving yet there are still countries that think it is so wrong. It was so nice coming back from town and seeing a lovely couple young male students enjoying the day and gladly holding hands and I am sure that was just an example of many and the lovely weather here sure was a bonus and being on the sea front a plus. Happy Same Sex Holding week to everyone. May this week be just the start of making this always the normal thing to do for everyone."J. Ford, from Aberystwth, Ceredigion, Wales
