Same-sex hand holding Saturday

It's Sshh! Saturday, September 2009

All around the world, same-sex couples are taking to the street to hold hands. The first pic we recieved was actually from a group of guys, who work at GayRomeo. Thanks boys. You are truly hand holding champions!

Sshh! on the streets. Staff at GayRomeo.com do Same Sex Hand Holding (Sshh!) for the first Sshh! Saturday (26.09.2009), Amsterdam

These two young women were doing Sshh! walking hand in hand (after a visit to IKEA) - so they joined us for a family portrait :-)

Lisa and Rita at Frome Children's Carnival in England, just sent this in from their mobile phone! Brilliant!
"Although Lisa and I are straight, we wanted to add our support to the campaign. So many people don't appreciate how much difference a little gesture can make." - Rita

And this just in from Mexico:
"Hello, Mi name is Shagid and I'm from Mexico City, I am 31 yo and my friend Raymundo told me that u are interested in the photo I am with my boyfriend and I'd love to give it to you, he explained to me the motive and I think it is very interesting what you are doing.

About the photo...I didn't actually pretended to take this picture as it is, i just followed my instinct, I wanted to hold his hand and feel closer to the person i love. The place is called Coyoacan and on weekends it is common to go there to chill out and eat mexican food and sweets."

"This is me and my fiancee in Coventry, West Midlands where we live together holding hands on Saturday outside our home. We have been together a year now and we met at university."
Thanks, Amy

"Dear A Day in Hand,
Attached a picture from the sleepy suburbs of London, to show you don't have to move to Soho to hold your beloved's hand in public. The Kingston Telephone Box sculpture is a local landmark, and we held hands on our way home from the cinema on Saturday evening to mark the first SSHH day. I hope more and more people around the world become able to show their affection in the area they live in.
Cheers
Amy"
"Thanks for this initative - it is quite inspiring just as a concept - and then we tried it out. My partner, Sue (on the left), and I wandered through a garden centre hand in hand - it wasn't until we actually did it (specifically for this event but a day late - 27th Sept) that we realised how unusual it was for us. We felt quite uncomfortable - not because we don't want to hold hands and not (just) because of the people around us - but because it is not something we 'do' - it almost feels as though we don't actually know how to do it! A lesson for us indeed.
Thank you for the inspiration - it is a great idea and we enjoyed (and enjoy) being a part of it." Sal

"Hey A Day in Hand peoples,
I found your website and thought that it was such a great movement, I brought it to the attention of the exec board of the Lambda Student Union group that I attend at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, TN. They thought it was such an awesome idea, they helped me create a
small party/event in which LGBT members of Lambda came out to show their support for the event by taking pictures together, holding hands! A Day in Hand is such a great silent protest, hopefully these photos taken at the event will help show the support you desire!" Mitch Harp

"Here's a pic of us made on the 26th.

After a fantastic experience in Spain (Valencia) where two men holding hands is old news and no one looks at you twice, we are back in Italy, where, on the other hand, we risk being battered by homophobes and religious fanatics just for holding hands in public.

We are sick and tired of fearing for our lives whilst walking in the street.
Keep up the good work! :)
Thank you for this site!"

And from another hand holder.....

"Sadly I did not have my camera with me and the evening stroll was not planned.  I was with a guy I had met off the internet and we were driving around town and decided to go for a walk in one of the cruising areas in Limassol. It was something he has never done before and couldn't believe actually happened.  We walked and talked and at one point it just felt natural for me to take his hand in mine.  He was a bit worried not knowing if this action would be tolerated (he was just visiting and knows Cyprus is still quite homophobic).  I didn`t care and just told him to relax.  We went on for five minutes until we got back to the car and it just felt so right to express myself in that sort of way.  Of course we got a couple of strange looks from the men cruising in the area because we were just so out and obvious!  What were they doing down there though?  We went on to have a coffee and a nice talk and it was a good night.  From now on I will take my camera everywhere bit who would take the photo?"

"Yang and I holding hads in the car, as we often do. Took this mostly for A Day in Hand. This photo was taken on highway 880 in Fremont, CA. We were driving to Yang's mom's in San Jose. My feeling is that PDAs (Public Displays of Affection) are a positive affirmation of the feeling between two people. When I witness others doing it I'm uplifted. But I'm especially uplifted when I see same-gender couples doing it, because we generally lack positive displays of our caring for one another. The best way we can be role models is to simply live out lives openly. :)"
