Comfortable Marrakech24 Oct 2010 3:57PMYes,we know male hand holding is common here. No, it has nothing to do with homosexuality. Would I, a gay Westerner get away with holding the hand of my best friend Josh? Would it be obvious we were gay Westerners trying to fit into the cultural zeitgeist? Did we need to tread carefully? These were all thoughts in my head as I flew into Morocco on October 17th 2010.  But my worries were unfounded.  I have never felt more comfortable in any other place in the world to hold my gay friend's hand. We got no comments and no stares. In fact we felt more a part of the culture! If you want to hold your partner's hand without fear of homophobia...go to Marrakech. Just be sure to butch it up. Apparently they're more concerned about how masculine or feminine a guy is rather than where he puts his hand e.g. you can hold your boyfriend's hand as long as you don't mince. Now to test this hypothesis, I did camp it up a bit and mince around the market square. I did get a few stares but I guess that was because I was in full Muslim garb. In short...nobody cares what you do in Marrakech. Hold hand hands or don't hold hands. Just make sure you haggle and everything will be fine.
