"I’ve only recently started noticing people’s reactions to us holding hands in public– sometimes a double take, sometimes an offensive comment, sometimes a very pointed look in the other direction. It seems strange to me that something that’s such a natural part of a relationship stirs up such strong reactions in so many people, but it’s not helped by the rarity of seeing same-sex couples holding hands in public. I know that identifying yourself as part of a minority group (especially one that provokes such vitriolic reactions in some people) can be scary but it’s a step towards fighting the vicious circle we create by being invisible. And I’ve realised that however people do react, I’m still always glad we’re holding hands. It’s about showing love in front of the rest of the world, whether they like it or not - giving a big ol’ F*** YOU to anyone who has a problem with us, and a nod and a smile to all those that are buoyed by seeing two people in love, whatever their gender."
