A Day In Hand supports Candle-lit Vigil Against All Hate Crime

Trafalgar Square, London: 8pm-10pm

Friday 30th October 2009

Same-sex hand holding (Sshh): Our silent revolution.

A Day In Hand calls on all attendees of the silent Candle-lit vigil Against All Hate-Crime to hold hands with someone of the same gender in support of equal respect for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans (LGBT) people. This vigil has been organised in response to the death of Ian Baynham who was attacked in a homophobic hate crime in Trafalgar Square and remembers all those who have suffered from hate crime.

David Watkins, Founder of A Day In Hand, who will be speaking at the vigil says, “Homophobic hate crime continues to raise its ugly head and we must be clear about the damage it causes. However, people have the power to fight homophobic hate crime by supporting the right of LGBT people to hold hands with their loved ones in public. By increasing visibility of same-sex love, we ultimately seek to reduce homophobic hate crime. Only when it becomes clear that same-sex love is widely spread in every community, will LGBT people firmly become part of the cultural landscape. Do not let hate crime win. Live your love, for all to see! In this way we can tackle fear, usualise our existence and change hearts and minds.”

How can you make a difference?

We call on people to continue to hold hands with someone of the same gender throughout the weekend and beyond.

Send your Sshh! photos to yourstories@adayinhand.com

A Day In Hand announces the second ever international Same-sex hand holding (Sshh!) Saturday on October 31st 2009.  On this day, same-sex couples and friends all over the world are encouraged to hold hands in public to support the visibility of LGBT people. This is a revolutionary way of encouraging and inspiring LGBT people to take responsibility for their equality and live their lives without fear or restraint.

The Vigil is being organised by the Facebook group 17-24-30 which was set up to mark the 10th Anniversaries of the London Nail Bomb attacks on Brixton, Brick Lane and Soho. This vigil has been organised in response to the death of Ian Baynham who was attacked in a homophobic hate crime in Trafalgar Square. We also remember all those who have suffered and continue to suffer from all forms of hate crime. Please come straight to Trafalgar Square for the Vigil, please do not bring banners and placards - we want to see a sea of candles and faces. Bring non-drip candles. NO GLASS. Please print out the attached poster and display.
