Photo Guidelines 14 Apr 2009

If you are intending to submit photos for our gallery shows or online, please read these guidelines.

1) Photos should show 2 people of same-sex holding hands (gay or straight).

2) Photo must have 1 or more members of the public in. More public is better. Crowds ideal.  Public need to be clearly visible but not necessarily faces, backs okay. Really interesting photos have straight couples holding hands in background.

3) In our experience, shooting hand holding couples in public mean photos are better with subjects in medium shot  -although this is not a hard and fast rule

4) Hand holders should be in very normal but distinct surroundings e.g. in a park, square, mall, library, post office, office etc. OR a famous landmark which allows viewers to identify location. We are not currently looking for photos of couples in Prides or equal rights rallys (this is because Prides and rallys generally create safer spaces for same-sex hand holding, and we are looking at places where same-sex hand holding is not normally seen)

4) Photos with info on subjects including their thoughts on same-sex hand holding are far more interesting than photos with anonymous subjects. If you do not manage to talk to the subjects of your photos, then record your own feelings on the moment instead. Testimonials are crucial to the campaign.

5) At present, A Day In Hand cannot pay photographers for photographs. We will always credit photographers and work hard to showcase their work in whatever capacity. We value our relationships with photographers who help spread our message.

Here are some photographs that are excellent examples for A Day in Hand.

Millenium Bridge arresting image, juxtaposed with straight couple hand holding

Southbank - spontaneous moment with lots of public

Picnic - very natural moment.

Trafalgar Square - great angle with straight couple and famous landmark

Picadilly Circus - testing comfort zone of subjects
