In the heart of South East London Kat can Jo bravely strolled through the streets. The sun was straight ahead of us and bright in the sky. Jo said "I have to say that being a part of the first same sex hand holding relay was important to both of us. Especially for Kat as she only came out last year. She still has the enthusiasm of when you first feel free to be your true self, that freedom that, until recently, I had forgotten just amazing it feels. It was a proud moment for both of us."

"Personally I had developed the attitude that most people who have been out for a while do, that in this day and age being gay is something you no longer have to shout about. And Kat was the one who arranged for us to take part in the relay I thought it was a good idea but then didn't think much more of it. As the day approached I began to think about what A Day in Hand actually signifies. It's not the big events around the World to show society we are here and proud, it's about being able to feel comfortable in every day life. And remembering that it's in every day life where we face our greatest adversaries.  It's not just about gay couples being able to feel comfortable in Suburban London holding hands, its anyone of the same sex in our culture, who are basically bullied by the masses for little more than a sign of trust and friendship between two people, whether they be family, friends, or partners."

"I hope that when young people hear about A Day In Hand that it gives them the courage to be true to themselves and not care what other people think." - Jo

Kat says "I haven't experienced much homophobia as I have only been 'out' for a little over a year.  I decided to do the relay without thinking about the risk that I was taking.  After David warned me, I felt more determined to do it.  Walking along New Cross Road I felt goosebumps wash over me at the sudden realisation that I was helping to make history, helping the change the way that society perceives two people of the same gender holding hands.  I am still a believer that your sexuality is not all you are and  respect that people from different backgrounds may not be comfortable with it being flaunted in their face, but nevertheless you should be able to hold hands with whom ever you choose.  I would gladly be a part of further events for A Day In Hand."
